Gutter Repair vs. Replacement in Tulsa: How to Decide
Every week someone in Tulsa pays $400 to reseal three corners on a gutter system that will need replacing next spring, and someone else pays $2,800 for new gutters when a $180 re-hang would have fixed the only run that was wrong. Both are avoidable with one rule and ten minutes on a ladder.
The rule
Repair if the gutters are aluminum, under about 20 years old, and the problems are in one or two places.
Replace if any of these is true:
- They are sectional — a joint every 10 feet, usually with visible screws or slip connectors at each one. Every joint is a leak now or soon.
- They are steel with rust bleeding through the paint or pinholes on the bottom. Sealant buys months, not years.
- More than a third of the total length needs work: sagging, leaking, dented or pulled away.
- Hail has dented the front lip along most of a run and the roof is being replaced under a claim. Replace them on the same claim; see hail and storm damage gutter repair.
- The fascia is soft along more than a few feet. The gutter has to come down to fix it, and a 20-year-old gutter rarely goes back up straight.
Everything else is a repair.
What repair costs in Tulsa
| Repair | Typical price |
|---|---|
| Reseal a corner or end cap | $150 – $250 |
| Re-hang a sagging run, per 20 feet | $150 – $300 |
| Replace or upsize a downspout | $120 – $220 |
| Add a downspout to a long run | $180 – $300 |
| Replace a kinked or dented section | $200 – $450 |
A visit with two or three items is $300–$600. The math changes at about the third visit. A house with 180 feet of gutter that has needed $400 of work in each of the last three years has spent $1,200 on a system that would cost $1,800–$2,400 to replace with seamless aluminum and a warranty. If you are on visit three, stop.
What replacement costs
Seamless aluminum runs $9–$15 per foot installed in the Tulsa area, tear-off included. A single-story midtown ranch with 160 feet is typically $1,500–$2,400. A two-story in Owasso with 220 feet and six downspouts is $2,500–$3,700. The cost page has the full tables, and what the price per foot buys explains why quotes vary.
Three Tulsa houses, three answers
A 1962 ranch in Florence Park. Original aluminum, 5-inch, one corner dripping and a 30-foot run that sags after last winter's ice. The rest is straight and dry. Repair: reseal the corner, re-hang the run on hidden hangers, upsize the downspout while it is off. About $450. The system has years left.
A 1985 two-story in south Tulsa near 81st and Sheridan. White sectional aluminum with a joint every 10 feet, seven of them weeping, spike hangers backed out along the south side, soft fascia under two corners. Replace: patching seven joints is $1,000 and they will reopen; new seamless with fascia repair is $2,600–$3,200 and comes with a warranty.
A 2015 build in Broken Arrow. Seamless 5-inch, eleven years old, no leaks, but the back run overflows in every storm. Neither: it is a sizing problem. Add a second 3x4 downspout for $250. Why gutters overflow in Tulsa rain covers this one.
The age question
Aluminum gutters last 20–30 years in Tulsa if they are hung well and not beaten flat by hail. Galvanized steel is 15–20 before rust wins. Copper is a lifetime. What shortens all of them here is ice: a gutter that has been pulled loose and re-nailed on the same spikes three winters in a row is done, regardless of what the metal looks like, because the fascia behind it is full of holes and will not hold anything.
The hail complication
After a Tulsa hailstorm, the question is not repair or replace but who pays. If the roof is a total loss, the adjuster should be looking at the gutters too, and functional damage — a beaten-in front lip, flattened downspouts, split miters — is normally covered. A gutter with a few dimples on the back is not, and arguing it is a waste of a deductible. We document both honestly so the claim is decided on what is actually there.
What we do on an estimate
Every run from a ladder, a screwdriver in the fascia at the corners, a count of what is wrong versus what is fine, and a written price for the repair and for replacement side by side when it is close. You pick. The gutter repair page lists the repairs and the installation page lists what a replacement includes.
